About:Blank - Ready to Drive You Over the Blanking Edge

If you've recently noticed lots of popup advertisements, and your default home page on your browser has suddenly changed, it's certainly possible that About:Blank has become your new best friend.

What is About:Blank?

About:Blank is an adware program that hijacks your browser, changes your internet settings, and displays popup advertisements on your computer. While not inherently dangerous, it is intensely annoying, and it does have to power to create a few security flaws in your system, making About:Blank removal a very good idea.

About:Blank is a more sophisticated version of CoolWebSearch and its related programs. This family includes CWS, CoolSearcher, Cool Web Search, BootConf, MSInfo, SvcHost, DNSRelay, DataNotary, Trojan.Norio, Jetseeker, winlink, Xplugin, coolwwwsearch, Aze, Search Toolbar, Trojan.StartPage (Sunbelt), WinRes, Spyware.CHM.A, ieak6.CWS, and CoolWebSearch.info.

Things to Watch for with About:Blank

If you're concerned that you might have About:Blank on your system, there are several things you can watch for. One of the first things you might notice is how slowly your computer system seems to be running as a whole. Your system's virtual memory is what allows it to bring up the programs you want to work with. Each system has its own amount of virtual memory space, and the more virtual memory that you use during any given computing system, the slower your system will be to respond. If About:Blank becomes part of your machine, it will eat your system's virtual memory for its virtual breakfast, leaving little leftover for your desired programs to use. A good way to see this is to take a glance at the Processes tab of the Windows Task Manager. If you're not currently running any programs on your computer, but your CPU usage is up near eighty percent or so, the chances are pretty good that About:Blank or one of its best buddies has become a resident of your system.

Another thing you are likely to notice when About:Blank becomes part of your system is the popup advertisements you'll get during any given browsing session. About:Blank is one of those programs that looks at the keywords in the pages you are viewing, then sends you advertisements related to those keywords. For example, if you're looking at a real estate website, it may send you a popup advertisement about lowering your mortgage rates. Even if you're not hitting any of About:Blank's advertising keywords, though, the chances are pretty good that you'll be sent some of the links to advertisers anyway. One of the real problems with this, though, is that many of the advertisers associated with About:Blank are not family friendly. As a result, if you have minor children who browse the internet on a regular basis or who even just use the computer in question with some measure of predictability, it might be a good idea to keep them away from the computer until you've had a chance to eliminate About:Blank. Many of the popup advertisements are pornographic or they're for adult-oriented sites. Some are even for things like gambling sites, and keeping your kids away from those ads is just a good idea.

You should also be aware of the fact that clicking on the links in these popups is potentially dangerous. It could lead you to websites where more adware, malware, or spyware will be automatically downloaded to your computer, furthering your computer problems. The chances that you could get something far more serious than About:Blank are out there.

About:Blank also has the ability to literally hijack your browser and change your internet settings. You may notice that your default home page has been changed. While you may once have had a family friendly search engine as your default home page, you may now have the About:Blank page or one of its affiliates as your new default page. Additionally, you may also notice that you have a new system redirect page. Anytime a page doesn't load or a site is no longer valid, instead of being redirect to a generic "Page Loading Problem" site, you will now be directed back to About:Blank or one of its best buddies. It can change your internet security settings, creating a hole for other adware programs to slip through, leaving you vulnerable to more serious problems.

How Do I Remove About:Blank?

If you're ready to remove About:Blank, you have four basic options. You can try to remove it through your add/remove programs panel, but this doesn't work in many cases. Sometimes, it doesn't even appear in the panel. In other cases, it acts like it's going to disappear from your system, but then the next time you start your computer, it reappears, leaving you in the same boat you were to start.

Your second option is to run a system restore on your computer. This may not work for a couple of reasons. First, it may not work because your version of Windows isn't compatible with System Restore or Boot to Last Known Good Settings. Second, it may not work because About:Blank has been part of your machine for too long. System restore will only work right after About:Blank has become part of your computer system.

Your third option is to remove About:Blank manually from your computer. This, though, is a fairly difficult process. You must not only delete all of the associated program files, you must also remove all of the registry keys About:Blank creates at startup. If you've never worked within your computer's registry before, it is important that you be very careful. A mistaken keystroke could change the way your system operates, so it might be best to consult a professional.

Your final option is probably your best one. Update and run your current antispyware application to remove About:Blank. If you don't have an antispyware application or if your existing one can't remove About:Blank, try a program like ParetoLogic's XoftSpySE . It will not only remove the threat from your system, it will also help to protect you in the future.

About:Blank is a fairly serious problem. Remove it today.
