Anti-Virus Protection

Anti-Virus Protection - How to Defend Your Computer from Viruses

Anti-virus protection software is a must-have for every computer. There is really no way around it. The risk of infection is real and it is uncommon for an unprotected computer with an Internet connection to stay clean for longer than a few weeks, or even a few hours depending on what you're doing.

The effects of computer viruses vary depending on the specific virus, but you can expect that without any anti-virus protection you will suffer from the following problems:

*files in your computer will be modified or deleted without your knowledge,

*the email addresses you have in your address book will be stolen and then used to send the viruses in an attempt to spread the infection,

*your other security software (firewalls, spyware scanners etc.) will cease to respond,

*slow down or disable (for a short time) the general network performance,

*in most drastic cases, the virus can delete vital system files forcing you to perform a system reinstallation.

These dangers should be enough to convince everyone that installing some anti-virus protection software is a must. The point is that not every anti-virus program is equal and while there are some that are 90%+ effective, some are not even worth having.

The most popular anti-virus programs

These are the most popular anti-virus protection programs: Kaspersky, Norton Anti-Virus and McAfee (and maybe Panda AntiVirus). While it doesn't really matter which one of these programs you go with, it is important that you install an anti-virus because you could be endangering your machine without one.

(1) Kaspersky Anti-Virus

Kaspersky offers one of the highest levels of anti-virus protection. Theoretically, it is capable of detecting and removing all existing virus it finds. While it is fully customizable, and recommended for advanced users, Kaspersky has a set of suggested settings that give inexperienced users a chance to benefit from using this program, too.

(2) Symantec Norton Anti-Virus

Norton Anti-Virus is probably the best-known anti-virus protection software. Although it is as capable as Kaspersky, the relatively long time between updates (a week) means that there is still a chance to get infected with a new virus before Symantec comes out with the cure.

(3) McAfee VirusScan

McAfee VirusScan is another capable anti-virus protection program, perhaps even more effective than Norton Anti-Virus because the time between updates is much shorter. The biggest problem with McAfee is the fact that updating takes a lot of time - certainly more than in case of other programs.

A few tips about keeping your anti-virus protection working:

*Whatever you choose, make sure that you keep your anti-virus protection program active at all times. DO NOT turn it off even if you feel that it slows your PC down.

*Remember to keep the anti-virus software up-to-date - most of the programs will download updates automatically, but it is good to check it from time to time. Sometimes firewalls stop anti-virus programs from downloading updates and if you turn off the firewall alerts, you might not even know about it.
