AntiSpy Storm

A program that may take your computer by storm, if you notice an increase in pop-up ads and warning messages, you may have AntiSpy Storm installed in your system.

What is AntiSpy Storm?

AntiSpy Storm is a rogue antivirus program, which may have even updated itself to AntiSpy Storm 2008 once installed on your computer.  It seems to be a clone or relative of DioCleaner, and it presents a risk to your computer system mainly by producing excessive pop-up ads and warning messages that indicate your computer is at serious risk.  AntiSpy Storm is designed to spur users to purchase its antivirus protection. Unfortunately, the level of protection it has to offer isn't always as good as it sounds.

Are There Signs that AntiSpy Storm is Installed in My System?

As is common with other rogue antivirus programs, you will notice an obvious increase in pop-up ads.  These warn that a scan of your computer done by AntiSpy Storm has found several security threats.  The ads will also claim that AntiSpy Storm is the only product which can resolve these issues and keep your system operating safely. In addition, you may see unfamiliar icons in your system tray.  If you click on them, you will be treated to more pop-up ads for AntiSpy Storm.

You may also notice that your browser's start page and/or desktop settings have been changed.  AntiSpy Storm can hijack your start page in order to divert you to its own website and urge you to purchase its antivirus protection.  AntiSpy Storm may also be tracking your internet browsing habits and gathering information about you.  This is then sold to advertisers, which results in yet more pop-ups served on behalf of those advertisers.

Another indicator that AntiSpy Storm is installed on your computer is that all of your system processes are running more slowly than usual. Rogue antivirus programs like AntiSpy Storm run continually in the background, using your system's resources.  Always a good sign that something unintentional is installed, this slow performance is just one of the many reasons you may want to remove AntiSpy Storm.

What If I Don't Remove AntiSpy Storm?

If AntiSpy Storm is left on your computer indefinitely, it will certainly continue to produce masses of pop-ups and false scan results. It will also continue to bog down your computer and make it run sluggishly.  It could potentially cause your personal data to be insecure.

It's important to note that installing the full version of AntiSpy Storm will not resolve the issues you are seeing already, nor will it prevent future difficulties.  The sole goal is to scare you into purchasing the program - it does not actually fix any problems associated with viruses or security risks.  It may, in fact, cause more problems.  AntiSpy Storm often comes bundled with other programs, which can cause greater system instability.

How Did AntiSpy Storm Get Installed?

Rogue antivirus programs like AntiSpy Storm can use a number of different methods to gain access to your system.  It must be installed manually, but it can accomplish this without your consent.  Often, just clicking on the ad, even to decline AntiSpy Storm protection, is enough to cause the program to become installed.

Another common method that AntiSpy Storm uses to gain access to your computer is to come in on a Trojan with free video downloads.  A Trojan like Zlob disguises itself as a video codec and can introduce AntiSpy Storm and other programs into your computer.

Shareware or peer-to-peer software is another common way for AntiSpy Storm to enter your system.  Adult websites are also notorious for harboring Trojans like Zlob and Vundo, and that often means AntiSpy Storm isn't far behind.  The Trojans can automatically download when you click on a link within the site, and they often bring programs like AntiSpy Storm with them into your computer.

How Do I Remove AntiSpy Storm?

If you have a rogue antivirus program such as AntiSpy Storm on your computer, you may have already tried to delete it.  If you use the add/remove tool, you may find that the problem has not been resolved.  This is because these programs are sophisticated enough to evade this basic action. You may also have tried running your current antivirus protection program in order to root out the problem.  This does not work effectively either, because rogue antivirus programs are not viruses.  Your scan won't detect them with reliability.

It is possible to remove AntiSpy Storm, however, using one of two methods.  The first is to use a software program to automatically remove the rogue program.  There are great anti spyware products, such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes has free malware removal) , that are designed to detect and remove rogue antivirus programs. It is specifically designed to rid your system of these problem programs, and they are very user-friendly.  By thoroughly scanning and searching your computer, reliable anti spyware products can remove every trace of AntiSpy Storm.

The other option, manual removal, may also fully remove AntiSpy Storm from your system.  It is much harder and more time-consuming, however.  When you manually remove a rogue antivirus program, you have to delve into your system's registry and delete any files or registry keys that are associated with AntiSpy Storm.  This requires a great deal of technical knowledge and experience and should not be attempted by those who lack this training.  You need to delete each file, process, and key in order to completely remove AntiSpy Storm.  If you do not, the rogue program may be able to recreate itself.  You also have to be cautious not to delete necessary files, which can severely damage your computer.  If you do have this knowledge, or if you have a professional to guide you, then try the following to remove AntiSpy Storm.
