Antivirus System 2011

When you are confronted with computer security problems, your first impulse is to act.  You want protect your data and keep your system running smoothly because you depend on your machine for information, work, communication, entertainment, finances, and more. When you have these issues and Antivirus System 2011 offers to fix them, it is tempting to buy the protection immediately.  But this program won't remove threats, and in fact, is likely the cause of any issues you are experiencing.  This is a rogue antivirus program that offers protection it cannot deliver.  We'll discuss how to spot rogues and how to manually or automatically remove them.

What is Antivirus System 2011?

There is a long list of rogue antivirus programs but they share the same objective: to convince users of security threats and persuade them to purchase software that provides little to no protection from present or future threats.  Some one million computers are affected everyday by some form of scareware, most commonly rogue programs like Antivirus System 2011.  Most of these behave in very similar ways and depend on the same tools, such as pop-up ads and false security scan results.  This, combined with slowed operation, convinces many users that they have security risks.  In the case of rogues, the cure is worse than the disease.

Signs and Symptoms

When you recognize the signs and symptoms that are typical of rogue antivirus programs, you can better avoid them.  The following are signals that Antivirus System 2011 has downloaded itself:

Pop-up ads.  These will start to show up whether you are online or off, warning you of imminent threats.  Typical messages include:

  • Warning!  System Under Attack

Threat detected:  Worm

  • Your computer might be at risk

Antivirus detects viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.  They

can (and) do destroy data, format your hard disk or can

destroy the BIOS.  By destroying the BIOS many times you

end up buying new motherboard or if the bios child is

removable then that chip would need replacing.

  • System critical warning!

You have been infected by a proxy-relay trojan server

Most of these are very short and are intended to evoke immediate response.  They appear as small balloon-style messages, but they are all just ads. Clicking on them will direct you to a website on which you will be urged to purchase the full version of the rogue.

False warning scans.  These mimic legitimate scan results and produce a list of files it says are infected.  The rogue program has either made up these files or has listed legitimate files as being corrupted.  They are not dangers to your computer; this, too, is an ad.

This rogue strives for the appearance of legitimacy by using the trusted Windows symbol in the top left corner.  Look again, and you will see the Antivirus System 2011 name clearly printed.  The message indicates that your antivirus protection is off, but don't worry, "Converting to a full license is easy!"  You are given the option to get the license key.  Do not click on the ad, and close it with your task manager.

New icons on desktop or system tray.  You may notice unfamiliar, flashing icons.  If clicked on, they will display ads or link to a rogue website.

Blocked security programs.  You may find that you cannot open your security program.  Your security settings have been modified, which is how rogue programs are able to operate in your system.  This may leave you vulnerable to other forms of malware.

More frequent redirects.  This is common when you click on search results.  Again, the objective is to urge you to buy the full version of the scareware.

Slow performance.  All of these tactics are fueled by your system resources.  The rogue runs constantly in the background, slowing your legitimate programs.

Antivirus System 2011 Modes of Entry

This rogue antivirus program relies on standard methods of entry, including:

  • Trojans and malicious websites.  Sites that are particularly vulnerable to trojans include those with "questionable" content, including illegal advertising, adult material, and pirated content.
  • Freeware,P2P, and social media sites, especially those with videos. Trojans disguise themselves as needed applications, such as video codecs.  When you opt to download the codec, you are inadvertently allowing the malware-carrying trojan into your machine.
  • Spam email and attachments.  These may download trojans into your machine or direct you to websites that urge you to download a codec, message, or other application.
  • User installment.  The previous entry methods result in the "free version" of the Antivirus System 2011.  When confronted with near-constant warnings, many people are spurred into action.  Unfortunately, there is no difference between the free and paid versions; neither can protect your computer.

Removing Antivirus System 2011

Rogue antivirus programs are not viruses; they have been able to change your security settings, so it is not possible to remove them using these same programs.  Rogues are designed to evade standard removal techniques, such as using the Uninstall or Delete feature or running your current antivirus program.  An easy, effective alternative, though, is to use a program such as Enigma's SpyHunter or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes has free malware removal) to automatically remove the scareware.  These programs are designed to detect and remove rogue antivirus programs and feature constantly updating databases, full scan processes, technical support, and more.

Manual removal is also possible, but it is more difficult.  Whereas with the two programs mentioned above, you simply have to run the program, manual removal calls for meticulous removal of each file and registry key associated with the rogue.  Caution is necessary because you can easily delete necessary programs or fail to remove every trace of the rogue.  For this reason, we urge you to email us for more detailed instructions if you want to manually remove Antivirus System 2011.  After manual removal, it is a good idea to run a reputable antivirus program to ensure your system is clean.
