Digital Protection

Knowing about an issue before it can progress into a problem for your computer is essential in keeping it in top running condition.  Rogue antivirus programs like Digital Protection employ tactics that are mainly irritating, but if left in your system, they can develop into security threats.  It's best to remove Digital Protection as soon as you know it is in your system.

Introduction to Digital Protection

Digital Protection is a typical rogue antivirus program; it comes from the same family as User Protection, Your Protection, and Doctor Guard.  While it is a newer version, it employs the same tactics that are characteristic of rogue programs, particularly pop-up ads and false scan results.  Like User Protection, Your Protection, Doctor Guard, and a host of other rogues, Digital Protection's goal is to persuade you that you have several unresolved security threats in your system, and that their full software is the only solution for removing these risks.  While these risks are false, Digital Protection will continually relay the same message and bolster its case with evidence of infection.

Digital Protection in Your System

When rogue antivirus programs first enter your computer, it is impossible to know they are there.  They are very stealthy, and during their initial residence, they quietly adjust your security settings.  This allows Digital Protection and others to evade your legitimate security program.  After that point, however, you will begin to notice several tell-tale signs of Digital Protection in your system.  Recognizing them early will help you remove Digital Protection before it can cause other security issues.

Slow performance.  Digital Protection runs continually in the background, which draws system resources from your other programs.  Opening files, loading web pages, and switching between browser windows will take much longer than usual.  While not definitive in itself, slow performance can be a sign of a rogue antivirus program.

Flashing icons on desktop and system tray.  You can't help but notice these flashing icons, and if you click on them, you will either see a pop-up warning or be directed to a rogue website and prompted to enter your credit card information.

Pop-ups.  This is likely to be the most noticeable sign of Digital Protection because they will become frequent.  These have various messages, but they typically all are very urgent, use exclamation points, use odd syntax, or just sound unprofessional.  Look at the following:

A security threat detected on your computer! This malicious program may steal your private data. Click on the message to ensure the protection of your computer.

Unauthorized person tries to steal your passwords and private information. Click on the message to prevent identity theft.

These warnings are false and should be closed using the task manager.

False scans.  Another rogue antivirus favorite, false scans indicate that your computer is not protected and several serious security risks have been found.  You will be able to tell it comes from Digital Protection because the name, followed by "Unregistered Version," is printed in the top left corner.  Always take the time to scrutinize any message; most often rogue programs do not hide their names.  They depend on you acting quickly; slowing down is often enough to thwart their plans.  Never opt to register the full version, and never provide credit card information.

Browser changes.  You may find it difficult to navigate to certain pages.  Digital Protection will issue the following warning randomly when you try to access a web page or open a file:

Warning! Virus threat detected!
Virus activity detected!
Trojan-Clicker.Win32 adware has been detected. This adware module advertises websites with explicit content. Be advised of such content being possibly illegal. Please click the button below to locate and remove this threat now.

Long-Term Effects of Digital Protection in Your System

Besides impacting your ability to navigate, work, communicate, or receive entertainment online, Digital Protection can eventually cause more serious instability in your system.  A rogue antivirus program in your system leaves a door open for Trojans.  These can enter and deposit other forms of malware.  Because your security settings have been altered, your legitimate protection program cannot always detect and remove these threats.  Removal of Digital Protection is necessary to ensure that your system runs safely.

Removing Digital Protection

Digital Protection and other rogue antivirus programs are adept at evading common removal techniques.  They hide deep in the system registry and can replicate themselves if incompletely removed by an uninstall or delete function.  Your current antivirus program does not detect Digital Protection and others because rogue antivirus programs are not viruses.  In order to remove them safely, you need to take more advanced steps.  While relatively easy to identify, rogue antivirus programs are notoriously difficult to remove.  There are two options available that can help you keep your computer running in optimal condition.

Manual removal.  This is difficult and time-consuming, but for those with technical experience and patience, it can be very effective.  It requires you to remove each and every file, DLL, registry value, and folder associated with Digital Protection.  It sounds easy enough, but it is all too easy to miss a file, which can allow the rogue program to recreate itself and continue issuing pop-ups.  It is equally easy to delete a necessary file accidentally, possibly harming your computer's performance.  Directions follow for those with experience who want to manually remove Digital Protection.

Automatic removal.  This is a better, and safer, option for everyone.  Running a program like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes has free malware removal) , which is specifically geared towards rogue antivirus programs, will remove Digital Protection completely from your system without endangering your legitimate programs.  It requires no technical experience, and those who can operate a computer casually can handle running XoftSpySE.  In addition, automatic removal will cost less than hiring a technician to remove Digital Protection - or to repair the computer after an unsuccessful manual removal attempt.
