Internet Antivirus Pro

What is a rogue antivirus program?  While they may be called by different names and use slightly different techniques, the main objective of each is to persuade computer users to purchase their software.  Pop-ups, warning messages, slow functioning, and a host of other means are employed to meet this goal.  How do you recognize rogue programs like Internet Antivirus Pro, and how can you keep your computer safe?

What is Internet Antivirus Pro?

Internet Antivirus Pro is a typical member of the rogue antivirus software class.  It uses pop-ups and false warning messages to create the appearance of security threats.  Users are then urged to buy the useless "protection" of Internet Antivirus Pro. It can't be overemphasized that these warnings and scan results are false.  The infections that Internet Antivirus Pro finds are created by this program itself in order to persuade you that there are security risks.  This program is also known as Internet Antivirus Pro 2009 or InternetAntivirus Pro 2009, General Antivirus, and Personal Antivirus.

How Does Internet Antivirus Pro Enter My System?

Internet Antivirus Pro has ads for its software all over the internet.  Certain vulnerable websites display pop-ups or banners that will simulate a security scan if users click on them.  It then displays the infections and recommends that you buy the full version of the program in order to fix these infections.  Again, remember that these are fake.  Because these programs closely resemble real antivirus software, they can be very persuasive.  When confronted with a laundry list of infections, users understandably want a fast solution.  This is one way that this program gains access to your system.

If you did not install the program yourself, how did it enter your system?  Rogue antivirus programs often travel on the backs of trojans and gain access in this way.  There are different trojans capable of doing this.  Vundo, for instance, is found on adult, gaming, warez, file sharing sites, and spam emails and attachments.  Zlob, another common trojan, enters your system when you download free or inexpensive videos.  These Trojans bring in malware, including Internet Antivirus Pro.  It is also possible to launch this program by clicking on one of its many pop-ups.

Do I Have Internet Antivirus Pro in My System?

Knowing the signs that Internet Antivirus Pro has gained access to your computer is important, especially if you did not intentionally download the program.  As mentioned earlier, Internet Antivirus Pro runs false scans and produces a list of infections.  This program can generate false warnings that appear in the websites you visit, lending it credibility.  The pop-ups look legitimate, so make sure to always read them carefully.  The name Internet Antivirus appears in the top left corner with a logo of the Earth and a shield.  The shield mimics that of AVG.

A common warning reads:

Spyware Protection is disabled.  Your personal data is at high risk of being stolen or misused.  Click "Enable" to left system detect spyware threat and protect your personal information.

Security Level: Low

Another:

Windows Security Center

Windows Security Center reports that Internet Antivirus Pro is turned off.  Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats.  Click here for the suggested actions.

Notice that the warning seems to come from your Windows Security Center and implies that Microsoft endorses Internet Antivirus Pro, which could not be further from the truth. Avoid clicking anywhere on these ads, and close them using the Task Manager.  In addition to the pop-ups, you will find that your computer runs much slower than usual.  Internet Antivirus Pro buries itself in your system and diverts power away from your regular programs.  It can use as much as eighty percent of your CPU capacity.  If you notice that your files are taking longer to open or that your internet connection has slowed, it can signal the presence of a rogue antivirus program.

Other indicators include: changed browser settings, including hijacked homepages, new icons in your system tray, and new shortcuts on your desktop.

How Do I Remove Internet Antivirus Pro?

This rogue antivirus program has been in action since July, 2008, but since April, 2009, it has increased in prevalence. In response, Microsoft has issued a patch that will detect this program.  It is an update to the Windows MSRT (Malicious Software Removal Tool).  If your scan has indicated that you do have Internet Antivirus Pro in your system, then it is important to remove it as soon as possible.  To do this, you have two options:

Automatic Removal.  This is a perfect solution for anyone who wants to remove this program.  Programs like ParetoLogic's XoftSpySE are geared towards rogue antivirus programs, which are notoriously difficult to remove.  It is vital that all traces be eliminated, and by using software such as this, you can be assured that it is.  In addition, it does not take a lot of technical experience to use XoftSpySE or other good programs.  You can be secure and back to work, or play, in no time.

Manual Removal.  This can also remove Internet Antivirus Pro entirely, but it is far more involved and complicated.  Only those with extensive experience and a good deal of time should attempt to handle all the necessary steps.  If you do, then the following will help remove this program:
