Is PC Defender Pretending to Defend Your System? Remove It!

There is nothing more frightening than the thought of an infected computer, but many of the programs out there that claim to be helpful are often little more than a distraction and a nuisance in the area of computer security. PC Defender certainly falls into that category. Classified as rogue antispyware, the program works very hard to convince you that your machine is infected with numerous viruses and spyware programs. Your only defense, the program further suggests, is to purchase the full version of the software online. Doing so, unfortunately, won't help your problems, as the software simply isn't built to handle any actual protection. Removing PC Defender at your earliest convenience is your best option.

How Will I Know if PC Defender is Installed?

If you do have PC Defender on your machine, there are a number of different signs you can look for to ensure you're thinking about the right program.

● False Scans: One of the most prominent features of this program is the scanning capability. Anytime your computer is on, a scanning window can pop up, and it looks like very real security software. With a logo in the top left corner, tabs for Scan, Report, Scan Scheduler, and Live Update, as well as other features like a progress bar at the top, a list of threats found, and even clean and fix buttons in the bottom right, it's understandable why so many people go ahead and purchase the full version of the program. If it does scan your computer, you'll get a list of very scary results suggesting you have all sorts of virus problems onboard. The simple reality, however, is that you have none of those on your machine. The threats themselves are fictitious files that don't actually exist on your machine, and clicking on the clean or fix button will only take you to a page where you can purchase the full version of the program.

● Security Warnings: Many people, in addition to the scans, also notice a number of different security warnings associated with this program. While the text may vary from warning to warning, they almost all look like a pop up advertisement you might see while you're browsing online. Many of them say "Danger!" at the top with a red background behind it. Here's the text of the most prominent ad:

File: C:WINDOWS\Cursors\help_r.cur

Threat detected: Trojan.Win32.Llac.bia

Risk level: High

Description: Malware

Are there Other Similar Programs?

Absolutely. There are literally hundreds of rogue antispyware programs that behave in the very same manner, and many of them are clones of each other. PC Defender is not alone in this arena. It's simply an updated version of PC Defender 2008, a rogue security program that was circulating just a few years ago.

Why Didn't My Antivirus Software Protect Me?

PC Defender is not a virus. It's rogue antispyware, and that means that your antivirus software physically can't detect it. Antivirus solutions are certainly necessary, and they're helpful in many situations, but antispyware software is also a must when it comes to your computer's security.

How Can I Remove PC Defender?

If you do have PC Defender installed on your machine, removing it immediately is your best possible choice, and there are two different ways you can handle this process. First, you can handle it on your own through manual removal. It's important to note, though, that this process can be a bit difficult, especially if you're not used to working within your program files folder or your computer's registry. Keep in mind that working inside these folders gives you access to the critical areas of your computer, and choosing to remove the wrong set of files or entering the wrong data while you're in the registry could be devastating to your computer as a whole. If this doesn't seem like the right method for you, you may want to choose another method of removal. If you've worked with program files and registry keys in the past, a list of affected files and entries appears at the end of this article.

Perhaps the better, and safer, PC Defender removal method is to have a helpful software solution handle the task for you. There are a number of really good choices out there, but you should research them carefully before you make your final decision. Make certain you're getting an actual solution, not just another problem. Two of the best choices are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes has free malware removal) and Enigma's SpyHunter.

Once you've selected the right security software to meet your needs, the next step in the process is to download and install it. Before you run a scan, make certain you update the software so you can have the latest spyware definition files to work from. Start the scanner, then let it work. At the end of the process, it will remove any problem programs, and you will have removed PC Defender from your machine. Ensure you set the program to auto-update and scan your machine on a regular basis to prevent future problems.
