Remove Pest-Patrol - Put an end to Pest-Patrol for good
No matter how much experience you have online, the one thing everyone is looking to do is stay safe. We are all on the lookout for the newest and best anti virus program or the strongest possible protection from those individuals who might harm our computer systems. One program that claims to help protect us from all sorts of potential problems is Pest-Patrol. Unfortunately, it may not be as helpful as it initially seems.
What is Pest-Patrol?
Pest-Patrol is one of many rogue anti spyware programs that currently exist on the Internet. Rogue anti spyware programs claim to be able to protect your computer from spyware and malware, when they don't actually offer any protection at all. The point of any of these programs, and particularly this one, is to try to get you to purchase, download and install the full version of Pest-Patrol to your hard drive.
It's very important to note that you should not confuse Pest-Patrol with eTrust PestPatrol, also known as CA Anti-Spyware. This is a reputable, helpful program that can eliminate rogue anti spyware applications as well as many other difficult programs.
What might you notice with Pest-Patrol
Programs like Pest-Patrol have several different ways of manifesting themselves on your hard drive. One of the first thing you may notice is what looks like a Windows notification balloon informing you that you are being attacked. The notification usually says something like "Pest Patrol Alert" at the top. That is followed by the text "Infiltration Alert" with a description of the pest that is supposed to be attacking your machine. It almost always asks if you want Pest-Patrol to block the attack. Clicking "Yes" will lead you to the Pest-Patrol homepage where you will be asked to purchase the full version of the program.
Along with notifications like these, you will also notice pop up windows that look very much like virus or spyware scanning windows. These windows have been meticulously designed to appear just like authentic pop up window scans that you might receive from a more well known anti virus program. These fake scans will alert you that you have hundreds or even thousands of infections just waiting to be fixed on your computer. You can relax, however, as almost all of these positive scans are false.
You may also notice that your computer is slowing down quite a bit. This is because programs like Pest-Patrol begin running from the moment you turn your computer on until the moment you turn it off. Since your computer only has a finite amount of memory, this leaves significantly fewer resources available for everything else you do. You can try using the Ctrl-Alt-Del utility to turn off Pest-Patrol, but often times, this only helps temporarily.
How did Pest-Patrol get installed?
Picking up a program like Pest-Patrol is easier than you think. It tends to be associated with the Zlob and Vundo Trojans, and it is often disguised as a video codec. In most cases, it is automatically installed by a website that you visit. It wasn't that long ago that most web browsers automatically installed any software that any web page told them to, and many people still use their browsers with this setting turned on. You may also have gotten Pest-Patrol's software installed on your machine by downloading and installing another program that had Pest-Patrol attached to it.
Removing Pest-Patrol
If you would like to uninstall Pest-Patrol, you have two choices. The easiest is to choose a respectable anti spyware product. In order to do so, talk with friends and coworkers about their anti spyware solutions. Do some research of your own. Carefully read and evaluate product reviews, screen shots, and descriptions. Once you find one that you think may meet your needs, simply download and install it. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes has free malware removal) is one of many good choices. When you have completely installed and updated the software, be sure to run a full system scan. Your chosen program will identify and repair any problems you have on your machine related to Pest-Patrol.
The other option is to perform a manual removal of Pest-Patrol. Be warned, however, that manual removals of any program are dangerous because you will be asked to delete files directly off of your machine, and you will be asked to change your computer's registry. Please be sure to perform a complete back up of your computer's files and of your machine's registry, too. If you've never worked with your computer's registry in the past, this might not be the best time to start. Choosing a program to automatically remove it is the better option.
Pest-Patrol can be quite a nuisance, and removing it at your earliest option is the safest thing you can do for your computer.
First, stop the following process:
PestPatrol.exe
Then delete the following files:
PestPatrol.lnk
PestPatrol.exe
iewarning.dll
For free automatic removal we recommend using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This program is widely recommended by reputable third-party sites, so you can be reasonably confident of its ability to safely get rid of Pest-Patrol and any hidden Trojans. As a precaution we recommend double checking your system with Spyware Doctor. This program requires paid registration to enable deletions, however it has a money back guaranteed and is the top of the line in malware removal. It should catch malware that evades Malwarebytes and block anything that tries to reinstal itself.
Important note: If Malwarebytes is blocked by malware then run Chameleon (Start Menu → All Programs → MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware → Tools → Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Chameleon).
