Pest Trap - More an Invitation Than A Repellent

If you've noticed an odd notification window in your system tray, and you're experiencing overall system slowdowns, you may be the newest victim of Pest Trap, a nasty adware cousin of several programs that tries to frighten you into purchasing anti-spyware software that you don't need.

What is Pest Trap?

Pest Trap is adware that will install itself on your system, then offer false alerts as to your spyware status. It has the ability to install other programs on your computer once it's there, and it can compromise your overall system security. You probably got Pest Trap as you were browsing a site. It's what's called a "Drive-by Download," in that it simply installs itself on your system just because you're on the site. It's not a program you have given permission to install.

Are There Programs Like Pest Trap?

There are actually several programs similar to Pest Trap. The program itself seems to be a close cousin of SpySheriff, and the chances are good that they are interlinked on your system. Other similar programs include PestWiper, SpywareNo, SpywareDemolisher, SpyFalcon, Spy Trooper, BraveSentry, and Diaremover. All seem to be program clones created to cause the same system problems.

Who Owns Pest Trap?

As with other spyware programs, the answer to this question is difficult at best. Many sources have found a false address in London, England, and it seems to be associated with SpySheriff's parent company SS Development. These adware program creators, though, tend to be difficult to locate for obvious reasons.

What Might I Notice with Pest Trap?

If you do have Pest Trap, you're going to notice a number of things. One of the first things you'll notice is a pop-up balloon in your system tray. The message probably says something like "Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection! It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware." Clicking on the balloon Pest Trap is not only further rooted in your system, but SpySheriff, SpywareNo, and SpyFalcon are also placed deep within your system. Pest Trap then takes over your desktop, and your internet settings will be changed. Your homepage may be different (you'll probably see the home page for the program as your new home page), and your security settings will undoubtedly be compromised. The funny thing about Pest Trap, though, is it promptly finds the programs it installs on your computer as spyware, then tells you to pay for it to remove them.

How Can I Remove Pest Trap From My System?

Like most adware programs, Pest Trap cannot easily be eliminated from your system. If it were as simple as deleting it from the add/remove programs control panel, few people would ever have an issue with it. Moreover, if you get part, but not all, of Pest Trap removed from your system, your will be subjected to a reinstall, leaving you in the same shape you were before you started the process. Instead, you have three basic options when it comes to Pest Trap removal. First, you can try to do a system restore, or boot to your last known good settings. Because Pest Trap can install itself on any version of Windows, though, this work for all users. Furthermore, because some Pest Trap installations are worse that others, that may be more difficult than it sounds. Your next option is to manually remove Pest Trap from your computer. This involves getting rid of all the files it installs in your program log, and it also means editing your computer's registry. If you've never handled your system in this manner before, it is suggested that you don't start now. Working within your computer's registry is a dangerous prospect, and if you don't know what you are doing, you could certainly end up in a much worse situation that you're currently in. If you do choose the manual removal option, a list of program files and registry keys that must be taken off of your system follows this article. Your final Pest Trap removal option is to use your installed anti-spyware software. If you don't currently have reputable anti-spyware software on your machine, it's time to get some. The difficult thing, as best demonstrated by programs like Pest Trap, though, is finding the right program. So many of them are simply other adware programs in disguise that will only further harm your system. Be sure to read unbiased reviews of any program you choose to download. ParetoLogic is a particularly good one. Once you have good anti-software installed on your machine, update it regularly, and run a scan about once a week. However, with Pest Trap, it is important to note that even some of the good anti-spyware programs out there cannot find it because it has the ability to hide itself, so eliminating associated program files and editing your computer's registry may be the only true way to get rid of this little pest.

Pest Trap isn't a trap for the pests, it's a trap for your wallet. Be sure to remove it today.
