Rapid Antivirus

If you have been noticing more pop-ups than usual, as well as substandard performance from your computer, it may point to the presence of a rogue antivirus program.  Programs such as Rapid Antivirus use pop-ups and other techniques in an effort to persuade computer owners to purchase their software.  This is definitely a case of buyer beware, so learn to recognize the signs that distinguish a rogue antivirus program from a legitimate one.

What is Rapid Antivirus?

Despite the large number of rogue antivirus programs, they vast majority behave very much the same.  Rapid Antivirus, like others in its class, uses pop-up ads and false warning messages to create the appearance of security threats.  It then offers to resolve these issues and protect your computer if you purchase its full version.  Doing so will not fix the problems because it is Rapid Antivirus itself that is causing them.  Here is how it works:  whenever you start your computer, Rapid Antivirus launches into its scan.  It then produces a list of infections.  This is done to convince owners of several security issues.  The catch is that these scans are really just sophisticated ads, and the infections Rapid Antivirus finds either do not exist or are legitimate Windows programs.

Rapid Antivirus is a clone of Antivir64, Vista Antivirus 2009, Antivirus 2009, and Power Antivirus 2009.  It also goes by the names RapidAntivirus 2.7 and Rapid Antivirus Firewall.

How Does Rapid Antivirus Enter My System?

Rogue antivirus programs advertise all over the web.  One of the main modes of entry is owner installment.  Why would someone choose to purchase and download Rapid Antivirus?  These programs can be very convincing; they know that everyone needs computer protection, and they offer to give it.  In addition, the myriad pop-ups back up their claims that there are threats.  No one wants to compromise their personal or financial information or expose their computers to risks, so they purchase Rapid Antivirus.  Unfortunately, this will not resolve the issues and may cause even more.

If you didn't purchase Rapid Antivirus, it may still find its way into your system through trojans.  It typically enters with a fake video codec.  When you download and play videos online, you need a video codec.  This compresses the media file for storage and sending and decompresses it when you need to play the video.  Trojans such as Zlob masquerade as video codecs and enter your system when you download videos.  Particularly vulnerable are sites that offer free or very inexpensive video downloads.  Once Zlob or the other false codec is in your system, it installs malware.  In this way, Rapid Antivirus gains access without owner permission.

How Do I Know Rapid Antivirus is in My System?

Rapid Antivirus does not necessarily need your permission to become installed in your system, so it is very important that you recognize the signs that it has taken up residence.  The first thing that you will notice is the pop-ups. These appear to be from legitimate antivirus programs, so use caution whenever you encounter one of these.  A typical one will have the Rapid Antivirus 2.7 name in the upper left corner, accompanied by a red shield with white stripes.  In the upper right corner, Rapid Antivirus appears again with the shield with the logo, "Helps protect your PC."   A scan appears to have been run, and there is a list of infections.  The results indicate:

Rapid Antivirus has found software that might harm your computer or compromise your privacy.  You are highly recommended to remove unknown software.

Your security status is listed as "At Risk," and you are given the option to activate protection, remove all threats, or continue unprotected.  No one wants to "continue unprotected," which is why these warnings can be so convincing.

You will also notice flashing icons in your system tray.  These mimic Windows Security alerts.  Clicking on them reveals a list of infections and redirects you to either rapidantivirus.com or rapidantivir.com.  Here you will be encouraged to purchase the full version of Rapid Antivirus.  You will also see pop-ups with the messages:

Critical System Error!

Or:

Your computer is infected.

Rapid Antivirus, like other rogue antivirus programs, can change your browser settings.  When you try to get to your homepage or another website, you are directed to the Rapid Antivirus sites.

Rapid Antivirus runs continually, taking up far more than its share of your system resources.  Your other programs will become much slower.  In addition, if this program remains in your system it may cause greater instability. It is possible that it may allow other Trojans and malware to enter and that it will send spam emails from your inbox.  Rapid Antivirus can also connect to the internet and update itself.

How Do I Remove Rapid Antivirus?

To keep your system running normally and protect your data, you should remove Rapid Antivirus as soon as possible.  Rogue antivirus programs are technically sophisticated and are designed to evade basic removal tactics.  This is why trying to delete the program or running your legitimate antivirus software will not remove all traces.  How do you remove the program then?  There are two methods: automatic and manual removal.

Automatic removal is done through a reputable software program that is geared towards rogue antivirus programs. These are able to detect and remove these programs completely from your system.  They have the advantage of requiring very little technical experience.  Programs like ParetoLogic's XoftSpySE are effective, safe, and very quick.  You can remove Rapid Virus and resume normal computer activity immediately.

The other option should be pursued by only those with technical expertise because in removing the files and registry values, it is possible to miss some or delete necessary files.  Each file must be removed, but each also looks very similar to legitimate files.  It can be time-consuming and painstaking work.  If you have the time, experience, and patience, the following will help you remove Rapid Antivirus:
