Are keyloggers a danger?  There is a lot of confusion surrounding programs like Refog; the simple truth is that they are legitimate, legal programs that can be used in illegitimate and even illegal ways.  What is Refog intended for, and what risk can it pose to you or your computer?

What is Refog?

Keyloggers are programs that track each keystroke, and there has been increasing demand for these types of applications as employers, parents, schools, libraries, law enforcement, and other groups try to monitor computer usage.  There are different levels of features offered, and with some keyloggers, you are able to track each keystroke, each website visited, how long someone stayed on a particular application, and you can even get screenshots.  These are marketed towards parents, for example, as a way to ensure predators are not contacting or interacting with their children.

Refog is a bit different.  It isn't intended as a monitoring device.  Instead, its publishers, Mipko Software, market it as a way to back up and protect data.  It does keylog, but as a way to preserve information.  It does, however, also offer much of the same features as other keyloggers, allowing parents, employers, and others to monitor their computers, including:

• Capturing keystrokes
• Logging clipboard entries
• Logging websites visited
• Screenshots
• Customizing keyword alerts (you can create your own watch list)
• Application filters

You can easily back up data, monitor your children, or keep your employees in line.  Unfortunately, those with less laudable intentions can misuse Refog to suit their own purposes.

This program is available for download at CNET, Softpedia, and other reputable websites.  You will notice that many security programs will tag the Refog website as a threat.

How is Refog Installed?

Refog must be installed in your system manually.  In contrast to Trojans, which disguise themselves as necessary software or applications, Refog is downloaded directly by the computer owner, or by someone who has access to that computer.  Usually, it is parents, teachers, employers, and others who monitor the use of the computer for safety reasons.  But a family member, friend, employee, or someone else with access can install Refog in your system.  They need a few minutes to set it up, and then they can monitor your computer activities through any computer.

Some security programs are able to detect keyloggers like Refog, but these keyloggers are also updated frequently to ensure that they are able to remain hidden.  Stealth is one of their main selling points, for obvious reasons.  This makes it difficult to discover if one has been installed on your computer.  Likewise, traces of the program are not listed in your system tray, directories, task manager, or control panel.

Is Refog Dangerous?

This is a difficult question to answer.  In one sense, it is dangerous to cheating spouses who get caught or to lazy employees who get busted chatting all day.  But these are the intended applications, and when you are using a work or shared computer, you should not expect total privacy.  Refog does become a danger, though, when it has been installed on a computer system without the owner's knowledge.  This becomes an invasion of privacy and, in many areas, an illegal act.

The danger is that the installer will be able to access a treasure trove of information, including user names, passwords, your social security number, credit card and bank account information, and much more.

In a technical sense, Refog does not present much of a threat to your computer system itself.  While many keyloggers can create security vulnerabilities, this one is free of malware, Trojans, viruses, and backdoors, and holds a 100 percent clean certification from Softpedia.com.  You may find your computer running more slowly than usual, but this is because Refog is diverting some of your system resources for its own use.

Removing Refog

Removing Refog Automatically/Safely

Remove Refog Now:

1. Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spyware Doctor  
2. Run Reimage PC Repair Online to check for malware damage and repair if required.
3. Run a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
4. Remove all the detected infections (free).
5. Run a scan with Spyware Doctor
6. Remove any remaining infections
7. Reboot and rescan with Spyware Doctor. Your computer should now be clean.
