SearchAssistant - Helping You With Adware Infestation

SearchAssistant is a program that sends you advertisements while you search. The creator of the program claims it helps give you a better overall internet experience, but in reality, it's more of an annoyance than anything else.

Should I Be Worried About SearchAssistant?

SearchAssistant is a low level adware threat to your machine. While there have been no documented cases of SearchAssistant sending any concerning personal information back to its home server, it does have the power to record all sorts of things about you. The primary information it does send back are the keywords to the kinds of sites you visit so it can better target its affiliated advertisers at  you.

Adware By Any Other Name . . .

There are many versions of SearchAssistant running around online these days. Other names for the program and its variants include Home Search Assistant, Zango Search Assistant, Search Assistant Websearch, ZenoSearchAssistant, and 180SearchAssistant. Regardless of which version you actually have installed on your computer, the effects and uninstall procedures are the same.

SearchAssistant Symptoms

There are many things you might notice with SearchAssistant on your machine. One of the first things you'll notice is a slower running computer system. SearchAssistant, and its counterparts, install lots of programs on your machine. Each of these has a startup process that tells it to run every time you turn your computer on. As a result, you may think you are only running the one or two programs you clicked on, but your computer's virtual memory is being eaten by SearchAssistant and all of its processes. This means a slow response time for anything you choose to do on your machine.

Another thing you are sure to notice right off the bat is the number of popup advertisements you get. While some of these might actually be related to your browsing experience, many of them will not. For example, you may be shopping for a new credit card and  you get a credit card advertisement. In another case, though, you may be researching a health condition and you get an adult-oriented advertisement. Questionable advertisements are one of the primary problems with SearchAssistant for people whose children use the computer on a regular basis. Many of the SearchAssistant affiliate advertisers are pornographic or gambling related sites, so those who have minor children using the computer on a regular basis should watch out for these problem effects.

You may also notice new desktop settings. The chances are pretty good that you'll have new links for SearchAssistant's affiliate advertisers on your desktop and in your Internet Explorer Favorites folder. It is important, though, that you choose not to click on any of those links. They can take you to sites with driveby installation programs, furthering your adware/spyware problem.

One final thing you might notice if you have SearchAssistant installed on  your machine is the change in your browser settings. While you may have had a family friendly search engine page as your default home page, your new default is most likely searchassistant.com or some variation thereof. The other browser setting that might have changed is your default redirect page. If ever a page doesn't load, instead of being taken to the standard page loading error screen, you will be redirected to searchassistant.com or one of its affiliate advertisers.

Behind The Scenes of SearchAssistant

There are lots of behind the scenes processes that you may never notice as well. First, having SearchAssistant on your computer compromises your level of security. It essentially creates a hole in your safety net that allows other adware programs to get through. Moreover, SearchAssistant has the ability to update itself through your internet connection. Because it has open access to your connection, it can eat up your bandwidth resources any time it chooses, which can cause a real issue with some internet service providers. Keep in mind that SearchAssistant does transmit information back to its home server. While no cases of personal information reporting are currently known, SearchAssistant does have the power to not only record the keywords of the sites you visit, but also your passwords and your credit card numbers, so it's a good idea to remove it from your system.

SearchAssistant Removal

When you get ready to remove SearchAssistant, there are a few ways you can go about it. You can choose to take it off through your add/remove programs panel, and for some people, this seems to work quite well. For others, though, a few files are missed during the uninstall process, and the reinstall starts all over again the next time the machine gets turned on, so nothing is ever solved.

Another option is to try your system restore feature. This doesn't always work, though, because for some users, it is weeks before they notice SearchAssistant on their machines, and by that time, it is deeply rooted in the registry.

You could also manually uninstall SearchAssistant. You will have to delete any associated program files and edit your registry in order to do this. The right program files and registry keys to delete does depend on the version of SearchAssistant that is installed on your machine, so this may not be the best option for everyone. A partial list of files follows this article.

The best option for removing SearchAssistant from your computer is to go with a program like ParetoLogic. This antispyware application will help you easily uninstall all of the files no matter which version you happen to have on your machine.

SearchAssistant is a bit of a hassle, and it's a good idea to uninstall it as soon as you get a chance.
