Security Essentials is a piece of rogue software that attempts to pass itself off as a legitimate piece of software that is useful for removing viruses and fixing other problems with a users computer. The software should be avoided at all costs as it is installed using a Trojan that pretends to be a Flash update that is required for viewing videos on sites such as Youtube. To make matters worse it installs additional software that is used alert the user with fake popups informing them that their computer is infected with viruses and spyware.

When Security Essentials is installed it will configure Windows to launch the program every time the computer is started. Once it starts running the rogue software it will stop any programs from running on your computer alerting you with a message that claims the program is infected. By doing this Security Essentials is making sure that no antivirus software can be started to remove it. This message along with the many other messages that claim your computer is at risk of spyware need to be ignored. This may be difficult for many people as it will bombard the user with messages that appear to be official Windows messages, or the messages are loaded with computer terms to scare the user into thinking that there are multiple serious issues that need to be taken care of immediately. Finally the software will inform the user that in order to fix all the problems the full version of the software must be purchased. By purchasing the software more problems will be created as the software purchased will not fix any problem, and may end up downloading more software that the user does not want on their computer.

Since Security Essentials only attempts to recreate antivirus software it needs to be removed as soon as it is discovered on a computer. Since it stops any programs from running citing the fake infection claims, removing it is a little more difficult than other malware. The first thing that needs to be done is to stop the process from running. This can be done by starting the Task Manager and ending all processes that are associated with the rogue software. From there, removal is just like removing any other piece of malware from a computer. It can be done with tools designed to remove software that infects computers such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes has free malware removal) , or it can be done manually following the instructions below. Manual removal is only recommended for technicians or the very experienced as it may cause more harm if the wrong files are deleted.

Removing Security Essentials Automatically/Safely
