Put VirusHeat on ice: Basic removal instructions and information It seems these days that you can't navigate to any part of the Internet without a pop up or an advertisement telling you that you can't live without a particular program or utility. One common pop up ad that many of us are familiar with is for a program called VirusHeat. The makers of VirusHeat suggest their program is a premium anti-virus and anti-spyware utility that can make quick work of nasty bugs. Many users, however, find that once VirusHeat appears on their computers, they can't get rid of it. Let's take a quick look at how VirusHeat works, how you managed to get it and how you can uninstall it from your machine for good. What is VirusHeat? VirusHeat belongs to a growing family of programs known as rogue anti-spyware programs. Don't let the name scare you; the program can be completely removed from your hard drive if you follow the directions below. The point of VirusHeat, and many other programs like it, is to intimidate you into buying the fully licensed version of the program by performing false scans of your computer and "detecting" viruses that really aren't there. What you might notice VirusHeat is a very smart program because it causes many warnings to pop up on your computer that look very authentic; they look like warnings that would be caused by Windows or by a respected anti-virus program like Norton or McAfee. These include pop up balloons in the bottom right corner of your machine (near your clock) that warn you that viruses are present on your machine when they really aren't. If you've experienced this phenomena, you might have this program already installed on your computer. A second sign that you might have unknowingly installed this program on your computer is that your overall computer performance will likely be reduced. It will take longer for Windows to start up and longer for programs like web browsers and word processing programs to open. This is because a program like VirusHeat starts when you start your computer and runs constantly in the background. Programs like this use up a significant amount of resources, leaving little for your personal tasks. Finally, you might also notice that no matter how many times you reset your web browser's home page, you are always redirected to the VirusHeat home page. This might also be the case with your browser's default redirect page. This is because the program that is installed on your computer wants you to purchase the full version as soon as possible. If you've noticed this happening on your machine, you might want to consider removing VirusHeat. How did it get there? Programs like VirusHeat show up in many different ways on your machine. Sometimes, web sites that offer free downloads like ringtones or other freebies have programs like VirusHeat bundled with it, so even though you think you're only downloading one program, you're actually downloading VirusHeat, as well. You could also have gotten VirusHeat installed on your computer because someone unknowingly sent it as an attachment in an email. One final way that this program is passed on and installed from computer to computer is that you visited a webpage that secretly installed it on your computer without asking your permission. Remove VirusHeat If you would like to remove this program from your computer, you have three basic options open to you. First, you can simply use the add/remove program utility that is located in your computer's ‘Control Panel.' The only problem with this option is that sometimes, it doesn't remove the entire program, and VirusHeat can actually reinstall itself as if you didn't get it all. Try this option first, and if you are still showing signs of having the program on your machine, move on to step two. The second step is to download a reputable virus cleaning and anti-spyware program, such as Paretologic XoftSpySE. With just one or two passes of this programs scanner, you can detect and fix almost all spyware and virus programs on your computer. Even after you have removed VirusHeat with your anti-spyware program, be sure to keep it updated on a regular basis and don't forget to scan your computer frequently to avoid further problems. If you are a seasoned computer expert, you do have a third option available to you. You can manually edit your computer's registry, but this option should only be considered by extremely experienced computer users. Your registry is like the nerve center of your computer, and if you delete the wrong entry, you could do permanent, irreversible damage to your machine. You will not only want to delete the registry keys listed below, but you can also use Windows Explorer to delete the following files and folders, as well. Program Files:
