Winantivirus 2008 Removal

Have pop-ups taken over your computer?  If you've noticed a sharp increase in these ads, as well as security warnings, you may have Winantivirus installed in your system.

What is Winantivirus 2008?

Winantivirus 2008, also known as WinAntiVirus 2008, Winantivirus Pro, or XP Antivirus, is a rogue antivirus program from the same programmers who created AntiSpyWare Expert.  These are all offshoots of AntiVirus 2008, and Winantivirus 2008 behaves in the same manner as its predecessor.  Each of these programs aim to drive computer users to purchase its fraudulent program through the use of aggressive ads and warnings.

Is Winantivirus 2008 Installed on My Computer?

If Winantivirus 2008 is installed in your computer system, there will be several noticeable signs.  The most obvious will likely be the influx of pop-up ads and warning messages that you receive.  These warnings typically mimic a legitimate security scan.  It will read: "System errors detected.  To prevent data loss, system scanning is started."  It then displays a scan in progress, as well as a list of hardware and security errors it has found in your system.  You then have the option to use Winantivirus 2008 to remove the threats.

You may also notice new icons in your system tray.  When you click on these, a balloon warning pops up.  It has a red circle with a white X in the center and its name at top center.  The warning reads:

System files modification alert!

Some critical system files of your computer were modified by a malicious program.  It may cause system instability and data loss.  Click here to block unauthorized modification by removing threads...sessions...eBay, ......

Another common one reads:

Internal conflict alert!

Winantivirus detected internal software conflict.  Some application tries to get access to system kernel (such behavior is typical to Spyware/Malware).  It may cause crash of your computer.  Click here to prevent system crash.

In addition to these pop-ups, which are designed to scare you into purchasing Winantivirus 2008, you may notice that your computer is running more slowly than it normally does.  This is typical behavior when rogue antivirus programs are installed - they use your system resources to run themselves. This causes normally quick actions, like rebooting or switching between tasks, to take much longer.

Like other rogue antivirus programs, Winantivirus has the ability to hijack your browser start page.  It does this so you will be redirected to its website and urged to purchase the full package.  If you notice this occurring, especially after you've rebooted, there is a very good chance a rogue program has been installed.

What are the Risks Posed by Winantivirus 2008?

With these types of programs, there is always the risk that people trying to protect their computers are duped into purchasing unnecessary and useless products.  Once they purchase the "protection," the existing problems are not fixed, nor are any future problems prevented.  You will likely still be plagued with pop-ups and false warning messages.

Winantivirus 2008 can also cause greater instability in your system if it is left unchecked.  Programs like this make your system more vulnerable to Trojans and may install more software onto your computer.  This, in turn, causes more problems related to these specific threats.

How Did I Get Winantivirus 2008?

Rogue antivirus programs like Winantivirus 2008 can follow numerous paths onto your computer.  The most likely way Winantivirus was installed is through a Trojan, such as Zlob.  This is a Trojan which masks itself as a video codec.  When you download free videos, often Zlob will be introduced into your system, carrying hidden programs with it.  This is often how programs like Winantivirus are introduced onto your computer.  You can also pick up Trojans by visiting questionable websites or by opening infected emails or email attachments.

The pop-ups may also lead Winantivirus into your system.  If you opt to purchase the program, it will download.  Sometimes, even if you click on the ad to decline the "protection," Winantivirus 2008 will automatically download.  It is typical of rogue antivirus programs to install themselves without your consent.

Can I Remove Winantivirus 2008?

It is important that you remove Winantivirus 2008 as soon as you know it is on your computer.  How do you do this?  Rogue antivirus programs are designed to evade removal tactics, so you will need a more in-depth approach than simply using your add/remove tool.  This will probably fail to remove all of the program, in which case, it can recreate itself.

You may have also tried to use the antivirus scan that is currently installed in your computer, but this may also be futile.  Winantivirus, like all rogue antivirus programs, are not classified as viruses.  Thus, they will often go unnoticed by your current program, and they won't be able to be removed with this method.

You are left, then, with two good options.  The first is to purchase a reputable antispyware program which is made to detect and remove rogue antivirus programs.  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes has free malware removal) , for instance, can search your entire computer thoroughly (which is important because these programs can be quite stealthy) to find all the files and registries associated with the program.  This option has the advantages of being fast, easy, and effective.  It is suitable for all levels of technical ability.

The other option, manually removing Winantivirus 2008, is only recommended for people with extensive experience and knowledge of computers.  It is challenging and laborious to find each and every file and registry associated with Winantivirus.  Moreover, there is the risk that you will not completely remove the program or that you will remove necessary files by mistake.  If you have the knowledge, skills, time, and persistence, you can use your system registry to do the following:

mav_startupmon.exe
rtasks.exe
uwa7pcw.exe
wa7pinst.exe
