Do you have Winfixer? Experiencing slower system performance and popups that tell you your computer has issues, and that Winfixer can solve them? You may even have read the standard Winfixer claim online: "WinFixer 2005 is a useful utility to scan and fix any system, registry and hard drive errors. It ensures system stability and performance, frees wasted hard drive space and recovers damaged Word, Excel, music and video files." Unfortunately, though, this claim is just not the case. Like many programs that are unwanted downloads, Winfixer is malware. For most users, Winfixer is simply an unwanted program. These can clog your system, slow your overall processes down, and help to make your personal computing experience miserable. It is clearly one of the malware applications you just don't want on your machine. How Did It Get There? There are many ways you might end up with this program on your system, but the most common one is that it is often attached to other downloads, and often overlooked as you make your way through the download process. The most typical installation scenario occurs when you are on a site associated with the program. Keep in mind that you don't actually have to be at the Winfixer.com site. A dialog box pops up, asking you if you want to install Winfixer, and at that point, no matter where you click, Winfixer will install itself on your system. The only real way to prevent this from happening when it reaches that point is to close the browser application through the task manager. During the installation process of Winfixer, you won't be notified, nor will you be shown a privacy policy. Winfixer does offer a privacy policy at http://www.winfixer.com/privacy.html for the little good it will do you once your system has downloaded this application. Can I Just Leave It There? One of the biggest problems with Winfixer is that it claims to be an application that will help you maintain and fix any problems that you might have with your Windows Operating System. This, however, is truly not the case. In order for any of the "problems" it finds with your system to be fixed, you must order a costly paid subscription. Moreover, most of the issues it finds with the system aren't valid ones in the first place. It claims to help you fix problems on your system that don't exist, and therein lies the problem with this application. While it does seem to be benign in many cases, it can concern you as a user, and it does so based on partly untrue information, which is a hassle more than anything else. The advertisement for the program will pop up randomly during computer use once you have it on your system, and it may even run a fake system scan in an attempt to get you to purchase the program. While most users are only annoyed or experience a system slow down as a result of the installation, Winfixer does have the ability to shut down a computer's optical drive, so removing it is really the best option in this case. Are There Others Out There Like It? You may also encounter several similar programs. ErrorSafe comes from the same range of IP addresses, it it also claims to protect you from computer problems like crashes or corrupted files. WinAntiVirus is a pretty similar one, as is SystemDoctor and DriveCleaner. All of them will notify you that you have serious computer problems, but none of them can actually change that, and most of them will falsely tell you that you do have problems when, indeed, you do not. Most think this to be a member of the Vundo trojan family, making it that much more important that you remove it from your system. Where Did Winfixer Originate? Winfixer is a difficult one to track down. The parent company, Winsoftware Ltd, does not come from Liverpool, England, as they suggest, and the domain registration on the whois database shows a company in Ukraine that no longer exists. Most sources suggest the server comes from ErrorSafe Inc. at 1878 Hutson Street, Belize City, BZ, but this has yet to be tracked down by officials. A lawsuit in the United States has been filed against the company, but as it is so difficult to track down, the chances are quite good that nothing will be done in response to the suit. Getting Rid of This Pest Removing this one is a real problem. There are many files and registry edits added as soon as it installs, and getting rid of each one is essential to avoid reinstallation. If you just stop the program through the task manager, it will pop back up and reinstall. There are a couple of ways to try to get rid of it on your system. First, consider running your current virus software. Make sure it is updated, and any patches are downloaded. If that doesn't get rid of it, use a good spyware remover. Keep in mind that many of the ones you'll find online are simply clones of programs like this, so getting a proven product is the only way to keep from further causing system problems. If these methods don't work for you, your best bet is to manually remove each file and registry key. Keep in mind, though, working with your registry without knowledge of how to do so can wreak havoc with your system, so if you don't know how to deal with the registry, stay out of it. The manual removal file list follows this article. Without a doubt, Winfixer should certainly be removed from your system at the first opportunity. If you are unfamiliar with how to get rid of programs like this, and how to further protect your machine, consider having a professional take care of it for you.
