The Propagation and Operation of the XP-Shield Rogue Software

Most people know that when using a computer, there is the chance of contracting malicious viruses, spyware and other computer threats. One of the most advanced and used forms of phishing scams includes the XP-Shied Rogue Software. This application is usually installed by other spyware lurking on the computer's drive. The user will eventually experience a slew of unwanted pop-up-ads and other false reports claiming their computer is infected with tons of viruses and spyware. This lie will then prompt the user to use the fake application that may be disguised as a system scan or spyware removal software.

The sofware works by slipping through the cracks of authentic spyware detection software. This is done by coaxing the user to download the trojan manually and therefore bypasses the security system's filters.

How The XP-Shield Rogue Software Disguises Itself

The software usually disguises itelf to fool users into thinking the file is legit. It has been known to disguise itself as a browser plug-in extension, toolbar, archive file, email message, shared network, free malware scanning service and even an image. Video clips have also been known to be falsely represented. Rogue security software can also be installed on a computer using drive-by downloads. The spyware can install itself simply from a user browsing the Internet and using PDF viewers and email client list. This application can be installed without any input or action from the user.

The creators of malware and spyware applications are now using SEO techniques by getting infected URL links to the first page of the search engines. This is why simple Internet browsing can lead to a computer becoming infected by one of these applications.

Operation of the XP-Shield Rogue Software

Once this infected application is installed on the computer, it will alert the user with false security reports claiming their computer is effected. Sometimes the user will see an animation displaying the system crashing (which is a false simulation). The software may also disable certain parts of the system to enable the user from using resources to get rid of the application. Sometimes, the application will also entice users to donate money for false charities.
