Reimage Review

From problems like malware to corrupt registry keys, there's quite a bit that might leave your PC lacking in terms of performance, and attempting to solve the problem on your own simply isn't a realistic proposition these days. It could take weeks to diagnose the problem, then several additional days just to solve it. As a result, many individuals look to software solutions when problems like this crop up, and easily one of the most popular these days is Reimage. Claiming to fix every error, every crash and every freeze, it seems like the ideal way to solve any ongoing computer issues you might have, but the real question, as with any helpful PC tool, is how well does it truly perform?

The Reimage sales pitch is a fairly straightforward one. You download the software to your computer, and set it up to scan your machine. Aimed primarily at tech support departments or computer service companies, you may find the marketing materials to cater to users like those instead of the average home user, but there's no reason it can't work both ways in this case. The suggestion here is that it can find a number of serious errors on your PC including any operating system components that aren't working as they should be, commonly recognized reasons for crashing and freezing computers, software-caused blue screen messages, ongoing error messages, registry problems, missing or corrupt DLL files, malware and spyware programs, and any damaged caused by problem programs. Reimage, however, is not designed to fix errors within any third party programs. For example, if you're having problems with iTunes or your anti-virus program, Reimage can't solve that for you. Moreover, there are many hardware issues that just can't be fixed by this program. While the scanner can recommend that you replace the hard drive, it can't do it for you as it's just a software solution.

The real plus in all of this is that Reimage suggests it won't harm any user data in the process of restoring and fixing any problems with the machine, and whether you're fixing someone else's machine or your own, you probably understand how valuable that proposition is. Because so much data is stored on every single computer these days, the idea of a fix without restoration is absolutely key to the success of any program.

Interface

The program itself is a fairly easy one to use. It works thanks to ActiveX technology. At the outset, you simply download and install the scanning portion on your computer. Once that's done, you allow the scanner to run on your machine. If, for some reason, you can't even get your PC to boot, there are tools that you can use (from another computer) to create a bootable CD that will allow the computer to connect to the Reimage program and begin the scanning and repair process to ensure the computer actually begins functioning again.

Once you open the program, the scanner pops up and begins functioning. You'll see several charts and graphs that help map out the day to day performance of your computer as well as the crash history of your computer. You should also get a screen that demonstrates an overview of your hardware, the performance, and the stability of your machine. The scan summary might look a little scary, but it's pretty self-explanatory and very helpful in terms of what's going wrong with your computer. At the very top, you get a chance to look at how many threats have been found, and then you'll see the standard statistics involving your computer's available memory, how big your hard drives are, and how much space is available on them. You'll also see a quick rundown of your system's information at the right side of your screen.

At that point, it will let you know, with bar graphs and percentages, how stable your machine is in very clear terms. In fact, you should see a small meter with a red color on the left side and a green color on the right. The bar will fall somewhere in between with a percentage. For example, if you were having serious problems with the stability of your computer, you might get a rating of 17%. If you were having security issues, you might see an equally low number with the security bar. You should also be able to tell which applications are crashing the most and which programs are proving the most harmful to your machine.

As you continue down the summary page, you'll also see a "What's Next" box that helps you understand which problems Reimage can repair for you and which ones you may have to fix on your own. For those that Reimage can be helpful with, you'll have to purchase a PC repair plan. The actual download of the software is free. It's the repair plan that will cost you a bit of money. An unlimited number of repairs for a year will cost you $69.95 for one PC, but there are other plans available.

Once you choose a plan that's right for you, damaged files are cleared and problems are taken care of, and replacement files that are necessary to help your computer run efficiently are installed on your machine from their database of 25,000,000 computer components.

A finalizing repair screen pops up onto your computer and lets you know that the process is complete. You also get a chance to give them your feedback and let them know how it worked out for you and your machine.

Because it's such a clear-cut process, it's very simple for anyone to use as long as you understand that simply downloading the scanner won't fix your problem. You actually have to purchase a repair plan to solve any issues you may have with your machine.

Performance

As with almost any software that must scan your machine, there are a few aspects to the performance of the software. You need to understand how your machine functions during the actual scan, how it functions during the repair itself, and how it functions outside of the repair.

Unlike antivirus or antispyware software, Reimage is not designed to run in the background of other applications. While it's probably capable of it, other applications may run fairly slowly if you're trying to run this software and do something else. The goal here is to fix any problems you have with your machine, not to get as much functionality out if it and other programs at the same time. Fortunately, this isn't a huge issue, as the scan itself should take just about five minutes to complete. If, however, you've had to make a bootable CD because you can't even get the computer to start, it is possible that the process will take a bit longer in the end.

Likewise, Reimage is designed to work by itself on the computer during the repair process. Keep in mind that it will be deleting files and downloading new ones from the available database on their site, so using your other applications as it works may be out of the question. As with the scan process, though, this can usually be fairly quick. In most cases, it takes just a half-hour to fix your PC, but in extreme cases, it may take some time for the full repair to be completed.

As far as the functionality after Reimage has completed work, however, there is where it really shines. It does work as a registry cleaning tool. It does work as an antivirus solution. It even works as an antispyware solution. Fortunately, though, it doesn't stop at any of those functions. On almost every tested computer, it can reinstall the entire operating system without causing any problems to your user data. It can even actually fix problems that malware causes. What's more, though, is that there's a money-back guarantee involved too. The repair can quickly be removed from your machine, leaving your computer exactly where it was before you started, which is a must if you're unhappy with the overall performance.

Pros and Cons

+The interface is easy enough for novices to use right away, but the performance is so outstanding that tech support departments or even computer repair companies could use it as a substitute for any extensive service needs.

+The entire process is automated, so there's not a lot for a typical user to have to do. There's literally no way you can go wrong by just allowing it to run on your machine.

+Even if your computer is so badly damaged that it won't boot, Reimage allows you to make a boot disk containing the software and run it on that PC so that it can connect to the service and repair any errors that may have caused that level of damage.

-The scanner itself is free, but the repair is where the charges are involved. While this isn't really a drawback with the software, as it's far cheaper than calling a local repair crew or taking it to a big box store for repairs, it can be a real drawback if you don't understand the pricing model at the outset. It's probably best if you buy a year's worth of repairs, but there are other plans available that may better suit your needs.

-The program only supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Pre-XP systems and Windows NT or 2000 are not supported. Non-Windows operating systems are equally unsupported at this time by the software.

-You can't run this program without at least a broadband connection, and if your home or the computer's location is running from Wi-Fi, you may experience a problem. A wired connection is preferred for this program.
